Let’s face it. During the summer, when everybody leaves to go to amazing places around the world and you’re stuck here, D.C can get kind of boring. Even if a few of your friends are around, trapped like you, there’s really not much to do besides watch Netflix on someone’s couch and occasionally go out for Chipotle.

Summer at home is notoriously dull, so if you don’t feel like binge-watching 13 Reasons Why for the fourth time, here are some things to do this summer in nearby Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Comcast Outdoor Film Festival is an huge annual outdoor movie screening that lasts three nights in the month of August. Movies under the stars are always fun to go to with friends! Click here for more outdoor films around D.C.

You have probably heard about the well-known Color Run. If you like getting colorfully dirty, this event is for you. Also known as the “Happiest 5k on the Planet”, the Color Run is a race originating from the Holi festival, where full buckets of colored powder is launched at you until the air looks like rainbow fog. A great GoPro photo op!

If you’re willing to make your way out to Delta Pennsylvania, The Lights Fest would be an amazing experience. This whole festival centered around lights where you get to release lit lanterns for more incredible photos. They have live music and activities for kids to ensure you have a magical time.

Pack your bathing suit because the Black Light Slide is a huge glow-in-the-dark slip-n-slide. Each participant gets unlimited runs. Sit on inner-tubes and slide down for some slippery fun!

The Cultural Food Festival has a wide variety of food from around the world. Each country is limited to one stand, so only the best of the nation’s food is available. There is live music and performances from people of all different nationalities.
