The 2025 US Open was full of dramatic games and controversy. Highlights include Carlos Alcaraz’s dramatic toppling of Jannik Sinner for the men’s singles title, and Aryna Sabalenka defending her women’s singles title against Amanda Anisimova.
The excitement around the final was marginally overshadowed by the appearance of U.S. President Donald Trump, which sparked division among fans and raised questions about the convergence of sports and politics.
Alcaraz was the favorite to win the men’s title, as he continued his unstoppable run. He defeated Sinner with calm aggression in a four-set final, stopping Sinner from defending his title and reclaiming the World No. 1 ranking.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka’s powerful playstyle saw her drop only one set throughout the entire tournament, winning the final in straight sets over Anisimova. This cemented her status as the current women’s tour’s best hard-court player.
President Trump’s arrival at Arthur Ashe Stadium delayed the final’s start by over half an hour because of security tightening, making some fans miss the opening games of the match. The

crowd at Arthur Ashe greeted him with a mix of boos and applause, reflecting the political divide felt across the country.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) told broadcasters not to show the crowd’s reactions to Trump’s appearance, which critics claim to be a form of censorship and prompted debates about whether sporting events should be separated from harsh political climates.
Alcaraz answered questions from the press calmly and diplomatically. “It’s great for tennis to have the president at the final,” Alcaraz said, dodging the political implications and focusing on the sport’s public image.
“His appearance sort of took away from the match a little bit, making people talk about Trump rather than the match,” Senior and tennis fan Iman Al Said said.
Senior and tennis fan Benjamin Galbraith agreed, but had a different take. “The excitement of the match was so incredible, I barely heard anything about the political implications,” Galbraith said.
The US Open continued to amaze this year and caught the attention of many D.C. residents due to its proximity. Additionally, numerous fans love tennis because of the similar viewership between the men’s and women’s finals.
“I appreciate the fact that tennis is more equal – everyone I talk to about tennis is both talking about the men’s final and the women’s final at the same time,” Galbraith said.
